WB, ISO, & F-Stops

I have wanted to take a photography class ever since I got my DSLR 4 years ago.. better late than never right?  For Easter, my basket had a gift certificate in it for a 3 hour photography class at Herman Memorial Park in downtown Houston.  Yeah!!  So exciting!!

The class was taught by Jimmy Loyd a freelance photographer in the Houston area.. and I must say.. one of the nicest guys ever!  We met on Sunday morning at the Japanese Gardens on a glorious beautiful Houston morning.

We started with composition and I learned so much.  Just this weekend I was looking at a magazine in the car and I was showing Justin pictures. The rule of thirds, framing, use of lines, and all the fun rules I learned.   He asked if I was going to do that for the rest of my life.  Uh, maybe?

Then, the part that I can for.  We put the cameras in manual and learned all about adjusting the WB, ISO, Image quality, Aperture (f-stop) and shutter speed.  See below for  my learning process!

Almost all white! Too much light :-)

Where's the bag?

Getting closer

Few more adjustments. Got it!

Here I go again.. overexposed!

Better

Um.. Luann.. where are the legs?

Still no feet!

After looking at my pic, Jimmy asked. "feet?"

Yeah! I got the lighting and the feet!
After class, he gave us an assignment to work for 5 days and practice.  Then send in your best shot for a chance to win a gift card.  After practicing with Beckett for awhile I got some choices. All of these were shot in manual mode.

I love this one :-)

So I didn't win but I still love my picture :-)  He asked us to put our cameras in manual and just leave them there.  I have been practicing every chance I get.  Most of my pictures now are a mix of manual and auto.  I still use it as a crutch because I am not fast at making adjustments yet. But I am learning!  I stepped up and bought a screw on flash and new lens filter/hood which should come in any day.  Having a blast with my new hobby!
