Beckett's ECI Evaluation

On Wednesday, 2 very sweet ladies from ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) came and met with my sweet Beckett.  A physical therapist and a speech therapist.  This was our first evaluation. Children are recommended by their doctor's for this federal/state program when they don't hit milestones or their is some concern about hitting certain milestones. For Beckett, he was not walking at his 15 month and she gave us the option of waiting until the 18th month but I said, "why wait?"  Let's see if we can help the little guy out.

Mr. Beckett was in a great mood.  His brother Eli went to school which left Beckett to play with all the toys at home all by himself all morning.  He loved it.  They interviewed us both asking us a TON of questions.  The physical therapist worked with Beckett, checked him out, had him do some test but generally just observed him play, pull up, stand, crawl, etc.

When all was said and done of course, my Beckett rocked the social/emotional chart.  He was well above average in that area :-)  And in speech he was pretty much on pace.  Fine motor skills on pace.  The area where he is challenged is overall physical gross motor skills.  He scored on an upper 11 month level.  They are attributing this to a few factors.  He has low muscle tone in his legs.  Slight (very mild) hypotonia.. this can be caused by a number of factors but one of the main one being loss of oxygen which is quite possibly Beckett's reason.  With multiples in the womb, sometimes this happens.  But it is also genetic as well. But we don't really know.  Anyway, doesn't really matter why.. But also that his ankles pronate .. or roll inwards.  This makes him very unstable.  His "nature" as well as a more timid and sensitive child makes him less likely to want to walk if it feels uncomfortable or uncertain for him.  We don't know right now how much his continuing inner ear issues affect it as well.  We are having more test done with an ENT on March 22nd.

ECI is a wonderful program and after the evaluation, we enrolled him which means that a physical therapist will come to his school to do therapy with him.  She will give us exercises and things to work on at home with him in between visits.  He will also go to pediatric orthotics to be fitting for ankles braces to keep them stable while he learns to master this skill.  In time, we can take them off as he develops stronger muscles in his legs that can control the pronation.  The are small and fit in his shoes and kinda come up like a high top shoe.  Snazzy my little man will be in his new kicks.  We are looking at doing additional physical therapy privately since it is covered by our insurance.

My little man is going to get some great help in strengthening his legs and getting ready to chase his brother around!  Already we have started some of the activities and he did great this morning.. get frustrated with us because he much rather crawl but when pushed can find his balance.  I can't wait to see how he progresses and how the therapy works for him.

Will you keep him in your prayers?  He is a little hard worker to have accomplished all these milestones so far without therapy and I am so proud of him!
